The location of Atlantis has long been disputed by scholars ever since the naval power was first described by Plato in his work Timaeus and Critias. In January 2010, archaeologists began to search for clues about Atlantis in Spain. They narrowed their search to an area within the Donana national park. A team of researchers from Spain's Higher Council for Scientific study began to examine a marshy area of the parkland to find evidence of a 3,000-year-old settlement called Tartessos that they believed could help pinpoint Atlantis. They believed that Tartessos, a wealthy civilisation in southern Iberia, could be linked to Atlantis.
